Another attack on freedom of opinion and expression: Assiut University orders suspension of 15 students

    26/4/2004

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) strongly condemns news that Dr. Mohamed Rafat Mahmoud, Dean of Assiut University has issued an order for the suspension of 15 of the University's students for periods from two weeks to a month. It has also referred some 20 students to a disciplinary tribunal known as the "Legal Matters Office."

This decision follows peaceful demonstrations organised by the students in protest at Israeli assassinations of Palestinian resistance leaders in the occupied territories and against the American occupation of Iraq.

This decision forms part of a series of violations of the right to freedom of opinion and expression and the right to peaceful assembly since the war in Iraq started.

EOHR demands the annulment of such arbitrary decisions which violate the students' Constitutional right to peacefully express their opinions.
It asks that the Egyptian Government abide by its international commitment under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to respect the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of opinion and expression.
This requires the abolishment of the Emergency Law and amendment of Assembly Law no.
10 [1914] in order that the right to peaceful assembly is practically implemented.
