Three police officers imprisoned for torture
27/11/2004
The Helwan Misdemeanours First District Court handed down a one year prison sentence with labour and a 3,000 LE fine on the 25th November 2004 to three officers based at Helwan police station after finding them guilty of torture. The victim, lawyer Ayman Abu Elfotoh, was also awarded 2,001 LE civil compensation agreed to by the Interior Minister.
Sergeant Ahmed Abdel Aziz, First Lieutenant Abu Bakr Hamed Mohamed and Lieutenant Ahmed Mohamed Mahrouss were convicted of assaulting lawyer Ayman Abu el Fattouh. His injuries, which were described in a medical report, incapacitated him for twenty days. He was sworn at and insulted during the assault. On the 3rd October 2003 Abu Elfotoh had gone to Helwan Police Station in order to ask about someone being detained in the station. While talking to the sergeant, he was insulted, thrown on the floor and beaten on the head with a belt.
The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights has adopted this case as part of its campaign against torture and hopes that these verdicts will act as a deterrent to potential perpetrators of torture in the future.
