EOHR condemns arrests of Al Jazeera television crew
14/5/ 2005
The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) strongly condemns the arrest of members of an Al Jazeera television crew while they were attempting to film the extraordinary general assembly convened by the Judges' Club. This constitutes a violation of the right to personal security and freedom of opinion and expression, rights guaranteed under the Egyptian Constitution and international human rights instruments.
Security forces yesterday arrested nine members of the Al Jazeera crew and four cameramen who were all detained in Lazoughly state security office from 1 p.m. until their release at 8 p.m.
EOHR rejects security force interference and clashes with members of the media who are prevented by them from pursuing their work. This constitutes a violation of the right freedom of opinion and expression guaranteed by the Constitution and international human rights instruments. It calls on security bodies to respect the human rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution and international human rights instruments in a manner consistent with the steps currently being taken towards political and democratic reform and in Egypt.
