EOHR press conference on alternative right to exercise political rights legislation
11/6/2005
The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) is holding a press conference to present a new law on the exercise of political rights on Monday 13th June 2005 at 12 p.m. in EOHR's headquarters.
Existing legislation on the exercise of political rights, Law 73 [1956] must be replaced for several reasons, the most important of which are the fact that Law 73 was issued in the era of a single ruling party which dominated party life - the political landscape has completely changed since the law's promulgation.
The law is in addition littered with flaws such as complete domination by the executive of all stages of the election process; the preparation of the electoral register takes place under the supervision and control of the Interior Ministry while the executive dominates candidates' nomination procedures and election propaganda, sets the date of the elections, delineates electoral constituencies and prevents certain individuals from exercising their political rights.
Participating in the press conference will be Ibrahim Darwish, professor of constitutional law, EOHR Secretary General Hafez Abu Seada, Cassation Court lawyer Abdallah Khalil, People's Assembly members Abu el Ezz al Hariri and Ali Fath al Bab as well as NGO representatives and members of the Egyptian Constitutional Observatory.
