The Egyptian Civil Society Election Coalition affirms its independence from official bodies
18/7/2005
The Egyptian Civil Society Election Coalition affirms its independence from any official body. It confirms that it recently visited official bodies in order to inform them that the Coalition is determined to monitor the upcoming elections and to request that the necessary facilities be provided for election monitors.
The Coalition is grateful for the support expressed by the National Council for Human Rights. It however emphasises that it visited official bodies not in order to ask permission because election monitoring is a fundamental right which does not require anyone's permission. The Coalition's was seeking to persuade the authorities to take the measures necessary to facilitate its work.
The Coalition reaffirms its complete independence from all official bodies. It has refused all cooperation with official institutions in the past and will continue to do so in the future, because independence is a fundamental precondition for the neutrality and objectivity of the election monitoring which the Coalition is determined to undertake.
