19/10/2005
The Civil Society Election Monitoring Observatory convened its first meeting on Monday 17th 2005 for the preparations of the monitoring process of the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The members of the Observatory, who are a group of NGO's, agreed on sending requests to official institutions represented by the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Interiors to facilitate the work of the Observatory concerning the monitoring process.
The members of the observatory also agreed on including in the request that to be sent to the Ministry of Interiors a request to provide electoral lists for every polling station.
The Observatory will prepare a geographical report for all governorates, districts and all polling stations which will be monitored in the following elections aiming for a co-operation between all member's to face any violation that would take place in the course of the elections.
This would formulate a collective front in the process of monitoring to encounter any problem that would face this national monitoring.
On the other side, the members of the Observatory stressed on the importance of restructuring the overall structure of the Civil Society Election Monitoring Observatory, dividing the member-organizations into working organizations and honorary organizations. The working organizations will include all organizations that would be involved in the process of field and media monitoring in different stages of the elections. While honorary organizations will include organizations that will not play a direct role in the process of monitoring.
Finally, the Civil Society Election Monitoring Observatory's members expressed their anxiety of the primary indicators which were monitored by some of the members in the stage of registering the nominees which witnessed an exploitation of religious slogans, absence of the judicial supervision and the increase of the role of security. Accordingly, the members addressed a request to different official institutions and media to stick to neutrality throughout the whole process of elections, and until the announcement of the results.
The Observatory members call for all concerned official parties, nominees and media to co-operate with the Observatory to facilitate the required tasks to guarantee free and fair elections.
