EOHR Denounces Attack on Al-Jazeera's Anchor Ahmed Mansour
|
9/11/2005
The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) expresses its anxiousness regarding the attack on Ahmed Mansour, an anchor and a journalist, at Al-Jazeera Office in Cairo in preparation for an interview with Dr. No'aman Gomaa, Wafd Party Chairman, in his weekly program on Al-Jazeera. Mansour was surprised by two persons approaching him while on a cell call with Dr. Gomaa. One of the two unidentified persons asked Mansour about his name to which Mansour gave no answer.
However, right after Mansour ended his call, the two persons punched the anchor directly in the face, which led to Masour's losing balance and falling on the ground following which the two attackers spurred him in the face and head. Mansour reported afterwards that the attackers had intentionally injured him in the face and head which led to many bruises and swellings. Mansour program was forced to tell of the incident in details.
Following the end of the program, Mansour received phone calls from security forces after which he went to Cairo Security Directorate to inform about the incident.
In addition, EOHR has confirmed that Mansour's incident was only one among a long series of attacks against journalists from unidentified sectors, the most important of which is the attack on Mr. Abdel Halim Qandil, Al -Arabi's Executive Editor-in-Chief.
EOHR also condemns such incidents as human rights violations topped by the right to freedom, personal security, and physical body safety from torture, which is guaranteed via Egypt's International Covenant for Civil and Political Rights.
In this respect, EOHR calls upon the Minister of Interior to instantly consider the attack incident on Ahmed Mansour, o reveal the identity of the perpetrators, and to bring them to justice.
Finally, EOHR declared that security forces' failure to identify Abdel Halim Qandil attackers encourages more violations against the peaceful citizens and also Egypt's national security.
