EOHR Denounces the Summoning of its Lawyer by the State Security Investigations Office
|
8/5/2006
EOHR expresses its extreme denouncement to the summoning of EOHR's lawyer Mr. Usama Abdel Razik by the State Security Investigations Office on Saturday 6th May 2006 without any legal reasons or basis.
Usama was surprised by two police agents visiting his residence and they informed him that they were sent by the State Security Investigation Office of New Cairo and they demanded him to follow them to meet some officer in his office. When Usama asked the two policemen about the reason of summoning him, they refused to reply and treated him inadequately, so he refused to go with them. Five minutes later, they returned back insisting to take him by force, but he refused again.
EOHR states that summoning of human rights activists by security offices is considered an arbitrary act according to the Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, and a violation to their rights stipulated in national laws and international human rights laws concerned with personal freedoms and safety.
EOHR calls upon the Egyptian authorities to respect the rights and the freedoms of human rights activists, and to abolish all illegal security measures applied to them.
Accordingly, EOHR presented petitions to the Prosecutor General and the Minister of Interior calling for opening an investigation in this incident and a promise of not summoning EOHR's lawyer again.
