EOHR Demands an Investigation in Hassan Abdullah Incident
3/10/2006

EOHR expresses its deepest worries concerning information received on a hunger strike carried out by the detainee Hassan Abdullah Eid, Secretary of Youth at the Tagamoa Party in North Sinai and the coordinator of Sinai Youth for Change Movement. Abdullah went on a strike as a protest on detaining him with no legal basis and for the mal treatment he suffers at the Gharbaniat Prison.

Abdullah was detained on 6th September 2006 at his house by the State Security Investigations forces without stating any reasons. He was detained at the State Security premises (Arish Office). On the14th September 2006 he was transferred to Gharbaniat Prison where he started his hunger strike on 26th September 2006 and till now, to express his protest to detaining him without clear reasons, the inhumane treatment he suffered, and preventing his family from visiting him. On the other side, his family also went on a strike at the Tagamoa Party Arish Office since Abdullah was detained as a protest to the threats they receive and demanding the release of Abdullah.

EOHR reaffirms that repetitive detention constitutes a vehement violation to the right to freedom and personal safety, to be tried before a normal judiciary, and to challenge the legality of the detention. This practice also deprive them from the right to implement acquittance verdicts, as stipulated in the Egyptian Constitution and international human rights documents.

Accordingly, EOHR demands the immediate release of all detainees whom were detained by administrative decisions issued by the Ministry of Interiors, especially those who received an acquittance verdict from the Egyptian courts. EOHR also demands the abolishment of the supervision of the Ministry of Interiors on prisons and to charge the Ministry of Justice with such responsibility, and also to implement the judicial investigation system.

EOHR is concerned about the health conditions of Abdullah and requests from Judge Abdul Magid Mahoud the Prosecutor General to implement Article 42 of the Criminal Procedures Code and to dispatch a representative to investigate the situation inside the Gharbaniat Prison to avoid endangering Abdullah's life.
