EOHR calls for immediate investigation on hungry strike incident of Borg El Arab’s prisoners
21/11/2007

EOHR expresses its deepest worries concerning the hungry strike of 33 prisoners at Borg El Arab jail due to the mistreatment of prisoners who were terrified by police dogs and deprived from treatment in flagrant violations of national legislation, international covenants on human rights and the ideal rules of treating prisoners.

On Monday 12th November 2007 some of the prisoners at Borg El Arab jail, cell No.21 - who were accused of joining Muslim Brotherhood brands in cases No. 1006/2007 East of Alexandria and 43 /2007 criminal of Matrooh - were surprised by a sudden inspection by Borg El Arab’s administration lead by police commissioners and state security investigators with police dogs. They were examined and their medicines were confiscated. Prisoners committed an open hunger strike due to the arbitrary procedures. They refused to meet their families from Saturday 17/11/2007 appealing the public prosecution to investigate on their mistreatment inside the prison. EOHR called the prisoners' lawyers who confirmed the previous incidents as soon as it has monitored the hunger strike.

EOHR expresses its worries concerning prisoners’ health since they haven't eaten since Saturday 12/11/2007 until now.

EOHR calls the Interior Minister to launch an immediate investigation inside Borg El Arab prison to eliminate the reasons of prisoners complaints. It also called the Attorney General who has plenipotentiary power granted by the Criminal Law in Article 2 and Article 40, to monitor prisons and asks public prosecution members to go to Borg El Arab prison to investigate in the previous incident.
